Distributed acoustic (DAS) and temperature (DTS) sensing of an earth dam
The earth dam, built in the early 1970s to support the operation of the power station, was fitted in 2023 with more than 1,300 m of EpsilonSensor embedded in 5 sections (800 m, 2 x 140 m and 2 x 120 m). The system is designed for long-term active thermal leak detection (while heating the sensing path with parallel electrical cables) using Raman instrumentation (DTS), as well as short-term vibration testing using Rayleigh- based Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS).

The plot below shows example results of Raman-based temperature sensing while heating the electrical cable along the optical path. Most of the sensor path was below the water level, but a localised area above was detected, because the heating process there was much more efficient.
