First bridge in USA with 3DSensors for displacements measurements (shape sensing)
The project involves the first USA bridge equipped with 3DSensors for shape sensing within the concrete bridge deck and EpsilonSensors for strain measurements on timber pilings. Implementation of the DFOS system was aimed at structural health assessment and monitoring of the existing bridge over Johnson’s Creek on Old Landfill Road in Iva, South Carolina. Rayleigh-based interrogator from LUNA was used to achieve precise and

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system
This pilot project allowed vertical displacements (deflections) to be measured in real time as the truck passed. Comparison of the results showed excellent agreement with traditional spot gauges, as shown below. A high-quality Rayleigh-based interrogator (LUNA ODiSI), together with monolithic Nerve-Sensors installed on the existing bridge, allows for detailed analysis of its response to mechanical loading tests. The system can also be successfully used for long-term structural control.
