Load testing of micropiles in Mexico with embedded EpsilonSensors for strain sensing

This sucesfull project was the first step in introducing DFOS technique and monolithic sensors in Mexico. Six micropiles (3 in Zapopan and 3 in Naucalpan) were equipped with EpsilonSensors with Rayleigh-based ODISI (from Luna), additional cables with Brillouin device and reference spot FBGs. One of the aims of the project was to investigate 3 different construction technologies: single micropile, with expander body and with bidirectional cell.

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Monitoring of piles deformations during the setting, load tests and construction
Analysis of integrity by strain and force distributions along the entire length
Comparison between diffeent construction technologies of the micropiles
Unique knowledge for further optimisation and designing procedures

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

The graph shows the example strain distributions in the single micropile measured by the system: EpsilonSensor + ODISI interrogator. High spatial resolution measurements allowed a detailed analysis of structural integrity along the length, including strain and force distributions and any local perturbations in the structural performance.
