PEBSTER (1×1 m): strains and displacements in piled embankment with a steel mesh

The research was part of the H2020 funded “GEOLAB, Science for Enhancing Europe’s Critical Infrastructure”. The PEBSTER project focused on load transfer in piled embankments with steel reinforcement. In the first stage, the 1.1 x 1.1 m lab test was investigated using DFOS strain fibres, EpsilonSensors and 3DSensors grids. The analysis based on thousands of sensing points allowed a detailed assessment of the spatial deformation of the embankment (both strains and displacements).

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor and 3DSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Bidirectional sensing of strains and displacements within the embankment
Thousands of measurement points without reinforcing the analysed setting
Detailed scientific data for design, FEA validation and optimisation
The possibility to reuse non-overloaded sensors in subsequent load tests

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

Deformation of the embankment was determined by the presence of the stiffer columns. Their influence is visible both on the distributed strain and displacement profiles, as shown below. Thanks to the DFOS-based monitoring system, the internal performance of the embankment could be precisely measured.

Technical specifications

12 200 measurement points
122 m of sensing path
