Soil displacement measurements in Japan – distributed shape sensing
Monitoring ground behaviour is crucial to ensure the safety of provided work. Local deformations can’t be detected with conventional spot measurements. The aim of this study was to measure vertical displacements under the ground comprehensively in a geometrically continuous way by using DFOS technology. The 3DSensor with sufficient characteristics for ground application was provided for this project. Thanks to this, vertical displacements with high accuracy were measured.

The 3DSensor was installed on a flat surface linearly and fixed by placing loads every 5 m. Forced displacement was given in the vertical direction at the centre point apart from the end of the 3DSensor connected to the optical reflectometer. Vertical displacement of the 3DSensor at 2.5 m forward and backwards from the position provided with forced displacement was measured at intervals of 20 cm using a laser displacement transducer. Raw data in strains before and after deformation were measured, and displacements were calculated.
