Underground pipeline section: strain, temperature and shape sensing
The underground PE pipe (with an outer diameter of 200 mm and a wall thickness of 11 mm) was buried 1 m below ground level. The total length of the monitored section was 30 m. Both pipe and surrounding ground were equipped with different types of distributed fibre optic Nerve-Sensors (EpsilonSensor, EpsilonRebar, EpsilonGraph, 3DSensor) to measure different physical-mechanical quantities like strains, displacements, temperatures and vibrations.
DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor, EpsilonRebar, EpsilonGraph and 3DSensor

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system
The behaviour of the pipe was investigated during selected mechanical and thermal loads. The graph shows example strain distributions measured by the EpsilonSensor glued to the top surface of the pipe during the pull-out test. The very localised influence of the pulling belts is clearly visible. Next to the strains, also vertical displacements (shape changes) weremeasured.
