Prestressed T-shaped girders: strain, crack, stress and shape sensing

The R&D project was carried out at the Rzeszów University of Technology. The presented stage consists of two full-scale prestressed T-shaped girders with integrated monolithic Nerve-Sensors. They enabled simultaneous monitoring of various physical quantities during early concrete and mechanical loading tests. Three installation methods were investigated for new and existing structures (embedding, surface gluing, near-surface installation).

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor and 3DSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Simultanous analaysis of strains, stresses and displacements (shape changes)
Detection, identification and size estimation of all the simulated failures
Verification of three installation methods for new and existing structures
Advanced validation of theoretical assumptions and FEA calculations

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

The graph shows the spatial visualisation of the vertical displacements over length during the subsequent load steps as the force is increased. The values were compared with reference point techniques with very good accuracy.izontal displacements (shape changes).
