Shape sensing with 3DSensor: laboratory beginnings

Nerve-Sensors family introduced to the market the world’s first DFOS-based displacement 3DSensor. In contrast to axial strain measurements, it allows for analysis of the shape changes (expressed directly in [mm]) perpendicular to the sensor’s axis. This patented solution has already been validated in numerous in-situ projects. However, the concept’s foundations were rigorously tested through hundreds of laboratory measurements, monitored against independent reference techniques.

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Results expressed directly in [mm] as displacement profiles over the length
Self thermal compensation – no temperature influence on calculated displacements
Flexible composite sensors do not cause reinforcing effects in the material
Fast and easy installation of lightweight sensors robust to construction conditions

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

Early laboratory research demonstrated the high accuracy of the 3DSensor. By adjusting its shape, strain measurements were captured through embedded DFOS fibers, allowing displacements (shape changes) to be calculated using custom algorithms. The values obtained were then compared with reference measurements at selected checkpoints, as illustrated in the plot on the right.
