Strain and temperature measurements in bentonite and polymer concrete piles

Four polymer and four bentonite concrete piles (Ø300 mm, L = 4.5 m) were constructed in a 10 × 5.8 x 5.0 m (LxWxD) field in the NBIF laboratory. To allow pull-out tests, a steel bar (Ø32 mm) was embedded along the entire length. It was instrumented with 2 bonded distributed fibre optic EpsilonSensors for strain sensing and free fibres inside the PE tube to measure temperatures only. The objective of the project was to compare the performance of polymer and bentonite construction technology.

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Distributed strain sensing during mechanical load tests
Distributed strain and temperature monitoring during the concrete curing
Thousands of realiable data to compare the polymer and bentonite technologies
First global integration of DFOS with online cloud-based QuickView platform

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

Example strain distributions measured by two EpsilonSensors in selected load steps are shown in the graph. It is worth noting that this project was the first to use the QuickView platform to stream, process and visualize DFOS data. This was a significant milestone in the development and automation of DFOS sensing technology.
