The first smart bridge in the USA equipped with Nerve-Sensors

EpsilonRebars and EpsilonSensors were integrated (embedded) inside the unique concrete bridge in California. It was the first time in the USA that monolithic and composite DFOS sensors created a nervous system in such a large-scale object. The system was designed to provide the strain and temperature readings within the large-diameter piers and the concrete deck slab. Almost 2 000 m of Nerve-Sensors were delivered and installed within this spectacular bridge!

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonRebar and EpsilonSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Measurements of internal strains of concretein piers and deck slab
Analysis of thermal-shrinkage behaviour during early-age concrete hydration
Precise and reliable data for structural assessment during long-term monitoring
Detection of all local events or damages, even tens of metres underground

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

Nerve-Sensors were tightened to the existing reinforcement (almost 60 m long!) in a horizontal position which was then lifted up to be installed in a designed vertical direction. The photos are not able to reflectthis spectacular view!
