Thermal-shrinkage strains in hardening of expansive concrete

The knowledge of strain development over time is essential for shrinkage-free and expansive concretes. Thus, reliable measurements are of great importance, especially in thin elements. The DFOS-based strain sensors allowed to precisely monitor the shrinkage and expansion strains in time, both in concrete and on the carbon textile reinforcement. Finally, the assessment of the stress transfer was possible by comparison of concrete and textile strain values.

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Internal strain measurements during hardening of expansive concrete
Detailed analysis of the strain transfer between concrete and reinforcement
Thousands of sensing points in a thin element without disturbing its behaviour
Unique data for scientific analysis, FEM validation and PhD thesis

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

The concrete slabs under investigation were reinforced with a carbon textile grid positioned at mid-depth. In all slab specimens, DFOS strain sensors were glued on the grid and embedded directly in concrete, at a distance of 3 mm from the grid. Strain profiles registered during concrete hardening had different shapes depending on the monitored material and allowed for a very detailed analysis of strain transfer between the concrete and the textile reinforcement.
