Underground pipeline section: distributed acoustic sensing (DAS)

The underground PE pipe (Ø200 mm, t = 11 mm) was investigated using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and optical Nerve-Sensors glued to the pipe, as well as embedded in the surrounding ground at selected depths. Different locations and types of sensors (EpsilonSensor, EpsilonRebar, EpsilonGraph, 3DSensor) were used to determine the dynamic response of the structure due to different vibration sources. Measurements were taken at 40 kHz sampling frequency over the entire length.

DFOS Sensors Installed: EpsilonSensor, EpsilonRebar, EpsilonGraph and 3DSensor

Project challenges

How to apply non-invasive diagnostics in demanding historic structures?
How to get precise measurement data to detect local damage and imperfection?
How to measure detailed strain profiles over the entire height of the brick masonry wall?

Benefits of using the DFOS monitoring system

Analysis of vibration propagation in the ground and in the pipe in question
Detection of different vibration sources (walking, jumping, ground compaction)
Dynamic response of the pipe over its entire length (modal frequencies and shapes)
Identification of the vibration wave direction thanks to the 3DSensor design

Results of using the DFOS monitoring system

The DAS measurements were performed during the simulation of various vibration sources. The graph shows the example strain rates (µm/m/s) measured in both the length and time domain at a sampling frequency of 40 kHz. This event was identified as compaction work near the underground pipe. The intensity of the vibrations was also considered in relation to the distance.
